Here, they seek to make a difference in the lives of differently -abled people by creating an environment which empowers each person to develop and share his-her gifts. Students of the Department of Biotechnology under the initiative of SAGAR SMILES visited Asha Niketan on 2 october, 2017 to celebrate Gandhi Jayanti and International old age day (1st October, 2017). They spent some quality time with the gifts of the nature and tried bringing some change in their life by spreading joy and happiness among these beautiful angels and received letter of appreciation.

Dr. S. Kiran (Professor & Head, President AMI Bangalore chapter welcomed the gathering. Dr. K. S. Girish (Chairman & Professor, Department of Biochemistry, Tumkur University, Tumkur) was the chief guest and he has delivered a talk on “Role of iron in platelet activation and death”. Dr. C. P. S. Prakash (Principal, DSCE) has delivered the presidential address. Dr. Ramesh Babu DR (Vice Principal & HOD, Department CSE, DSCE) and Dr. H.     An academia Industry Interface “ENGINEERING CONCLAVE – 2018 ‘Striving for excellence’

    An Engineering Conclave (An academia industry interface) was organized by DayanandaSagar College of Engineering on 20th January 2018 to enrich the curriculum of various undergraduate program offered by DSCE. More than 20 experts from various industries were participated in the academia industry interaction programs conducted to get the industry inputs for the curriculum enrichment and design the new scheme for the academic year 2017-18. The Biotechnology streams was conducted at Centre for innovation and Leadership (CIL), CD Sagar Centre for Life sciences, DSCE on 20th January at 9.30 am onwards where the Department of Biotechnology, Department of Chemistry and Department of Chemical Engineering were participated. Dr. S. Kiran (Professor & Head, Department of Biotechnology) was the Chairperson for the Biotechnology Streams and he made the presentation on brief overview of the department and proposed scheme for the academic year 2017-18. Dr. AbhishekChoudahary (Senior Application Manager, GE Life Sciences, Bangalore) was the industry expert in the panel accompanied with Dr. N. Rajeswari (Associate Professor, Program Coordinator) Dr. M. Govindappa (Associate Professor, Event Coordinator) and all the faculty members.

    Dr. Sinsoh Skariyachan, Associate Professor, Department of Biotechnology has received the outstanding reviewer status from two peer reviewed prestigious journals namely (i) Journal of Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology (ii) Journal of Molecular Catalysis. B, Enzymatic published by Elsevier. Those reviewers, who are in the top 10th percentile in terms of the number of quality reviews completed within two years for that journals, are awarded Outstanding Reviewer status.

    The World Food Day is customarily celebrated by the Biotechnology Department, every year. This year it was celebrated on 14th November, 2017. The event was organized in collaboration with Association of Microbiologists of India (AMI-Bangalore Chapter). Multiple competitions such Pick and Speak, Quiz and Presentations were conducted on the theme of World Food Day 2017 – “Change the future of migration. Invest in food security and rural development.” The event was presided by Principal, DSCE, Dr. C.P.S Prakash along with Vice-Principals, Dr. Ramesh Babu and Dr. Ramakrishna. The chief guests for the event, Dr. T.M. Manjunath, Former Director, Monsanto Research Centre and Dr. C. Dayananda, CEO E2E Biotech Pvt Ltd, graced the occasion with short lectures to motivate the students. Dr. T.M. Manjunath also inaugurated the food stall competition arranged by the students from Department of Biotechnology (DSCE) along with Department of Basic and Applied Sciences (DSU). Prof. Neethu Urs and Prof. Soumya from Department of Civil Engineering judged the food stall competition.

    Description of the event

            In order to mitigate the curricular gaps and address the program outcomes (POs) which are rarely contributing to the course 10BT74 (Food Biotechnology), an activity based learning program was organized for seventh semester BE Biotechnology students. The Course Coordinator has organized a program on "Preparation of nutritious food (A Cooking Competition)" on 26 October 2017 at 12.15 pm to 1.30 pm in VII semester classroom. The students were divided in to seven batches and they were demonstrated various aspects of nutritional relevance of food, food processing, protocol for developing novel food varieties especially protein rich and fortified foods. The program covered three course outcomes (COs) and most of the program outcome (POs) which are not easy address by conventional class room based teaching. 35 seventh semester students and teaching & non-teaching staffs were participated in the program. A jury panel comprising of the Program Coordinator Dr. N. Rajeswari, Dr. Govindappa M (Associate Professors), Dr. Shinomol K George, Dr. Ishtapran Sahoo (Assistant Professors) were selected three best teams based on the taste, nutritional values, presentation and innovation in the preparation of food.

    The Department of Biotechnology has organized an industrial visit for 5th semester BE Biotechnology (Autonomous batch) students to Carl Zeiss, Bangalore, one of the premier international companies for high end microscopy manufacturing, on 16 October 2017. The graduates got an exhaustive exposure to the usage of various types high end microscopic techniques which included scanning electron microscopy, digital stereo microscopy etc., recent microscopy developments in nano & material sciences and the manufacturing of high end lenses and ophthalmologic devices. The program included presentation and live demonstrations on various applications of high end microscopy and 45 students got benefited from the program.

        Department of Biotechnology (Sagar Smiles) donated 80 biopsy needles for cancer patients at Kidwai hospital, Bangalore:

        We are happy to inform that the fund collected during the walkathon on March 19, 2017 by Sagar Smiles (student initiative of Biotechnology department) has been utilized to purchase 80 biopsy needles worth Rs.67200 through an NGO (Sanman) and the same was donated to Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, Bangalore.

        Dr. Shinomol George and Dr. Ishtapran Sahoo from the Department of Biotechnology along with student coordinators Amulya and Aishwarya S met Dr. K.B Linge Gowda, Director of Kidwai MemorialInstitute of Oncology and handed over the biopsy needles for which he provided a letter of appreciation in return.

        We thank Dr. C.P.S Prakash (Principal), Dr. Ramesh Babu D.R, Dr. Ramakrishna H (Vice Principals), Dr. S. Kiran (Head of the department), faculty members and all the students of Biotechnology department for their support and encouragement towards awareness program. We hope our small contribution will help some needy patients in their battle against cancer.

More than 500 people from Bangalore participated in this campaign. Mr. Suraj Gowda and Ms Kavya Shetty -actors in Karnataka film industry joined for the cause along with Dr. C. P.         The National Science Day was celebrated in the Department of Biotechnology on 28th February 2017 and the event was graced by Principal, Dr. CPS Prakash, Vice-Principals, Dr. Ramesh Babu, Dr. Ramakrishna, Head, Biotechnology, Dr. S. Kiran and Vice-President, Life Sciences, Dr. Ravishankar. The event was organised and co-ordinated primarily by the students of 4th and 6th semesters and was in line with the theme: Science and Technology for the specially abled. Two faculty members, Dr. Ishtapran Sahoo and Dr. Shinomol George K, co-ordinated the student groups and mentored them to organise the event. The event went on smoothly as per the plan and schedule.

        At the Valedictory function which was presided over by Principal Dr.C.P.S. Prakash, Vice Principal. Dr.Ramesh Babu and Head, Biotechnology Department Dr.S Kiran , the winners were given the prizes (science related books) and certificates. The organizing committee students were also honoured and acknowledged for their leadership skills.

        We sincerely hope that the encouragement received from this event will make our students the flag bearers of science and technology and would direct them to think in ways to help the society and the underprivileged.
